Who We Are and What We Do

The Hillsborough Society is a group of political centrists who support, guide, and encourage good candidates to run for office. We are different than most other political organizations that only follow one party line.

Our objective is to make life better for the people of Florida and preserve the beauty of this amazing state. We raise money for good candidates, we work to educate officeholders, we sponsor meetings on important subjects, and we are willing to take risks for change. 

Our Centrist Convictions

We believe in supporting a strong economy and supporting job growth. We want to work on all possible solutions to lower the cost of living for working people – which affects everyone. We do not believe in tariffs since they are taxes on ourselves and are highly inflationary.

 We believe many of the people who work the hardest in America have been treated badly by the Trump administration. Millions are now subject to health insurance cancellation including hundreds of thousands of people in Florida. They got the short end of the most recent tax legislation which gives the majority of benefits to the top 1%. And they are subject to dramatic cuts in education and government services which they need.

Immigration Policy

We want a good, solid immigration policy rather than the chaotic mess we have now. The harsh deportation program now underway has resulted in many mistakes, much civil unrest, and the mistreatment of hundreds of people.

Transportation

We want a robust transportation plan for Florida which means more than just road widening – we need a modern rail system. We need alternative forms of transportation to reduce the number of people getting killed on I-4 and other overcrowded, dangerous roads. We need to reduce commuter time for the average Floridian. Our interstates are full, our airports are full, and we have no rail.

Climate Change

We recognize that doing nothing about climate change for over 25 years has resulted in dangerous weather conditions including floods, tornadoes, fierce storms and fires that threaten the homes and safety of many Floridians. We know what causes global warming and we know how to reduce harm from it – but we amazingly have a President and a major political party that believe it is a hoax. Sadly, Florida is among the most vulnerable states for climate change because of our coasts. 

Law Enforcement

We think law enforcement should be better funded, not defunded. Every community deserves to be safe.
